Phase 1:
Early Inspiration and First Steps (2015-2016)
Munmay Swain’s journey into photography began in his school years, with a vision to become a professional photographer, though he was uncertain about the specific field he would pursue. In 2015, he took his first step by purchasing a crop-sensor DSLR camera, which soon became an essential tool for honing his craft. With no formal training, he started by taking photos of friends, who often invited him to click their pictures simply because he owned a DSLR. Despite his lack of experience, his friends praised his work, admiring the creativity he brought to each shot. This positive feedback motivated Munmay to take photography more seriously, realizing he had a natural talent for capturing people and moments.
Phase 2:
First Professional Experience and Initial Challenges (2016)
In 2016, Munmay’s life took an unexpected turn when he received a call from a stranger in need of an urgent wedding photographer. The stranger had received Munmay’s contact from someone who admired his photography skills. Though Munmay was nervous, as he had never photographed a wedding before, he accepted the challenge and attended the event with an open mind. To his surprise, he enjoyed capturing the couples and guests, finding fulfillment in documenting the joy and emotions of the day. The client was pleased with his work, paying him 2,000 rupees on the spot. This first payment marked a significant milestone, reinforcing his belief that he could pursue photography professionally.Reflecting on this experience, Munmay realized his love for wedding photography and storytelling. The event motivated him to learn more about wedding photography, and he began to research different techniques, exploring how to tell a story through his lens. This initial experience not only boosted his confidence but also inspired him to think seriously about making a career in wedding photography.
Phase 3:
Growth and the Push for Professional Equipment (2017)
As 2017 unfolded, Munmay’s interest in wedding photography continued to grow. He realized that to succeed, he would need better equipment and began researching full-frame cameras. Seeking support, he approached his grandfather, with whom he shared a close bond. Munmay explained his dream of becoming a freelance wedding photographer and requested financial help to buy a full-frame camera. Initially hesitant and unfamiliar with freelancing, his grandfather eventually agreed, setting a condition that Munmay would repay him within two or three years. Overjoyed, Munmay eagerly looked forward to making the purchase.Tragically, his grandfather passed away before the camera could be bought, leaving Munmay heartbroken. This loss was deeply felt, but his father, recognizing Munmay’s commitment and passion, stepped in and purchased the camera in honor of his late grandfather. Armed with new equipment and a strengthened resolve, Munmay began freelancing as a wedding photographer, ready to take on more professional work and expand his skills.
Phase 4:
Transition to Filmmaking and Founding Capturecrew Films (2018-2020)
In 2018, Munmay expanded his work from photography to filming weddings, realizing the powerful storytelling potential in video. This new venture allowed him to capture the moments, emotions, and intricate details of weddings in a dynamic and cinematic way. Over the next few years, Munmay’s work in both photography and videography led him to connect with countless couples, each with unique stories. Through these experiences, he developed a deep understanding of the importance of preserving genuine moments and authentic emotions. He learned to balance creativity with the clients’ vision, crafting memories that were meaningful and true to each couple’s journey. With nearly a decade of experience in freelance cinematography, Munmay felt ready to create something more substantial.
